FAQ

What exactly is it that we do?

Simply put, we play with swords at a reasonably high intensity as safely as possible. We study a fencing style that flourished in the 15th Century and was practiced primarily as a game, contrary to popular understandings of a “Mad Max” medieval world.

Is this a martial art or a sport?

Yes.

The real answer to this question is fairly complex, but the people who created the art that we study viewed this as far more on a spectrum than mutually exclusive. People in the middle ages also fenced for fun, much the same as people might train in BJJ primarily to compete or for fun; if a fight breaks out, they have training to rely on.

Do you compete?

Yes! And we do quite well for a small, new club. We compete in various regional tournaments with goals of reaching internationally ranked tournaments.

Could I get hurt?

Frankly, yes. This is a full contact combat sport, but we do the utmost to mitigate risk, use protective equipment, and maintain a culture of safety and mutual respect. The only reason we can do this long-term is by taking care of each other!

Do you ever use sharp swords?

Yes, but definitely on inanimate objects as cutting practice, and only at home at our own risk.

Is this a black, brown, LGBTQ safe environment?

Absolutely. The owner is both queer and of Huichol descent. It is one of the foundational aspects of our club that we are a welcoming place for underserved communities to learn martial arts.

Equipment

  • You will not need your own equipment for the first month of lessons.

  • It is extremely important that beginners do not buy equipment without first knowing what to look for and what their needs are.

  • That said, expect to spend between $60-$100 on fencing gear within the first 2-6 months. Do not purchase used equipment prior to coming to class. If you decide it’s for you, we will assist you along the way in selecting a steel and other training equipment.

  • For now, just bring flat-soled athletic shoes and some comfortable clothing if you’re a beginner.

  • If you’re an experienced martial artist, bring your gear and expect a quick safety check.
